Relationship Rest Days

What if we normalized giving each other space to rest and recharge, instead of equating constant closeness with success?

There’s this belief that love—real, lasting love—requires constant connection, effort, and attention. We’ve all been sold on the idea that a strong relationship means always being present, always engaged, and always "on." But I’m starting to realize that maybe, just maybe, the secret to lasting love isn’t about how much time you spend together—it’s about how much time you give each other to simply breathe.

Yep, I’m talking about relationship rest days. And no, this isn’t a new way of saying “let’s take a break” à la Ross and Rachel. It’s more like pressing pause to recharge individually, so you can come back into your relationship even stronger. Just like how your muscles need rest after a workout, your relationship benefits when you both take intentional time to step back, reset, and refocus on you.

Sounds radical, right? But hear me out.

The Case for Resting Love

I know what you’re thinking: Isn’t this just an excuse to ignore each other? Or maybe it sounds like a slippery slope toward disconnecting. But the truth is, space can be just as important as togetherness. Taking a day or even just a few hours to focus on your own self-care, hobbies, or even just vegging out solo can actually be the healthiest thing for your relationship.

Why? Because constantly being in “relationship mode” is exhausting. Whether you’re in the honeymoon phase or five years deep, like me (hey, Blake 💖), there’s emotional labor that comes with always being available to another person. If we don’t give ourselves a break, we can end up drained, resentful, or just straight-up annoyed at the little things that wouldn’t normally bother us.

And here’s the kicker—when you come back after that rest, the love feels fresher, deeper, and more intentional. You’re not just moving through the motions; you’re showing up as your best self—recharged and ready to connect.
